Our social impact
Get to know our purpose and the vision behind asistensi
We believe that health is key to the prosperity of nations, and we are on a mission to empower migrants to live their lives abroad with the peace of mind that we take care of their loved ones’ health back home, bringing access to quality healthcare to the countries that need it the most.
This lack of health coverage means that every year 100 million persons are forced to spend more than they can afford because of a medical emergency. For many of them, this financial shock from a catastrophic health expense is enough to put them below the poverty line.
Financial protection in health means that everyone can obtain the health care services they need without experiencing such financial hardships.
Offering this protection is a massive challenge for all of us as a society. It is in the plans of every single government regardless of their ideology and is pursued as a Sustainable Development Goal at the United Nations.
But despite all these efforts, it just keeps getting worse: the number of people incurring catastrophic health spending has nearly doubled since 2005.
In 2020 we launched asistensi to become part of the solution by creating an accessible primary health care insurance for countries that need it the most through a digital platform that facilitates financial support from its migrants. That is; we are tackling the problem by applying technology to transform health insurance and by channeling better help that is already there: the $700bn+ in remittances sent every year by migrants to their families back home.
By doing so, we are contributing directly to two key UN SDGs:
- Reducing the number of people that have catastrophic health expenditures (target 3.8 of the UN-SDGs) since each customer of ours is a person that is protected against these catastrophic health expenditures is one person less in this global indicator
- Reducing the remittance costs as a proportion of the amount remitted (target 10.c of the UN-SDGs) since each premium paid to asistensi is a remittance at a cost of 0% (or less if we take into account the savings of purchasing a cheaper and better coverage) cost
What if we could reduce the cost of emergency healthcare by going digital-first? This is our vision in asistensi: to make healthcare accessible to everyone using the power of technology.
All of this with a product that is truly inclusive:
- Admits people up to 85 years old, hence including the parents and grandparents of millions of migrants, age groups that are traditionally excluded from health insurance
- Admits several very common chronic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure, also a striking shift towards including those who are customarily rejected by health insurers even for what are known to be common ailments
- No copayment, no cash advance and no guarantees, because those that need health coverage the most simply do not have any of these luxuries, and
- Very competitive in price (up to 30% less than comparable products) and no health exams
